The short version: Without any particular qualification for doing so, I'm translating a German novel from 1916.
The longer version: I got a copy of Artur Brausewetter's Wer die Heimat liebt wie du (1916) from my grandfather's basement after he died in 2008. At the time, I was in high school and had taken German for about two years. When I was in college, I found a .PDF of the novel on the Internet Archive and used the virtually free paper at my disposal to print a second copy with the eventual goal of translating it. The ream of paper I'd printed out had been sitting around for about two years, so in March 2015 (a few months short of a year after I graduated university), I decided actually to start translating it - at the rate of one sentence per day.
My only qualifications for doing so are the four years of German I took in high school and the two semesters of German I took in college (my very first semester of college and my very last because I needed an-other foreign language credit to graduate). I've also been doing Duolingo every day for over a year (although that's not limited to just German).
